No, the water doesn't dilute your body fat. That can't happen; it's not like the fat is in a bag somewhere and when you drink, the water goes into that same bag and dilutes it. (And even if it COULD happen, water and fat don't mix. Don't believe me? Try pouring a cup of oil into a cup of water.)

But there IS a sort of connection between how much water you drink and your body fat, at least if you're trying to lose weight. Here's how that works:

Your body needs a certain amount of energy to live (just like a car needs a certain amount of gas to drive). If you eat more than this amount, your body stores the excess as fat cells.

If you eat less, your body breaks down those fat cells and uses the stored energy. However, breaking down the fat cells leaves you with leftover chemicals (like the exhaust from your car).

Drinking lots of water when you're losing weight helps your body get rid of those leftover "exhaust" chemicals, which keeps you healthier. So it IS a good thing to drink water when you're dieting, but not because it "dilutes" the body fat.

(I sometimes joke that drinking 8 glasses of water a day can help you lose weight because you spend all your time running to the bathroom. And sometimes I'm not sure it's a joke... :-)

Oh my, that's quite the misconception. Some of your body fat, which protects the organs, is necessary. The rest of your fat, which is "solid" is mostly saturated fat. I could explain why, but that's unnecessary information. The bottom line is, any fat is insoluble in water, so the amount of water you drink per day will not reduce your body fat. You lose a lot of water from you body everyday without even realizing it. The "8 glasses a day" is what is recommended to help you stay well-hydrated, which can lead to better health, along with regular diet, exercise, etc.

Water makes every cell and organ work more efficiently. It raises your metabolism a bit so your body automatically burns extra calories. It makes you feel fuller, so less food is eaten. (In theory!)Water doesn't dilute fat, as far as I know, but it does FLUSH out toxins and wastes and makes fat less likely to adhere to tissues, organs, and clusters of other fat cells.
