Actually, it's a myth that laser pointers can make you go blind. The only known cases of blindness associated with laser pointers were both only temporary, and had to do with two girls staring in to the laser pointer for something stupid like ten minutes. Their sight came back after a while though.

Anyway, the parents got upset, complained to the government, and the government issued some warnings, then people blew everything out of proportion.

The biggest danger from laser pointers is just them being used in appropriately (flashing them in the eyes of someone driving a car, for instance), because of the temporary flash blindness

Ashley P is correct. Laser pointers are low energy Class 2 lasers. They hurt, can cause some damage but usually only temporary effects.
