this muslim guy at work, he prays and everything. He pulled $40 and gave it to an old christian woman. he told her i will give you $40 weekly until you get over ur hard time.
he first did it in secret but everyone knew about it.

so it's ok to give charity to non-muslim who is poor?

of course its ok! were supposed to give money, clothes, etc to anyone that needs it, muslim or non!

Yes, giving charity is one of the 5 obligations of each Muslim and we must give to those in need with out going against our religion I.E. is someone is hungry we would not donate pork products, or if someone needs clothes we would donate long pants instead of short skirt etc.

It doesn't matter, it's his conscience and heart that is at work, not his head. He is faithful, but that doesn't stop other people needing help. He seems like a good guy, even moreso that he did it discreetly and didn't declare "Look at me!! Look at what I'M doing!"
He feels like he is doing the right thing. And that isn't a bad thing to help another in need.
Even I give to other religious charities. It doesn't matter, the charities aim is to help needy people, regardless of the needy people's relgion.

yes it is ok! and many people do. many Muslims here in the US donate stuff to the salvation army.
