We're not really looking for style or looks.
We want to get him a safe car that he can drive, although
there are many disputes among whether passenger cars
of SUV's are safer to drive.

For the purpose of this question, just assume budget isn't
a factor. All I would really like to know is what would be safer
for a teenager to drive as their first vehicle.

I imagine he will use this vehicle throughout highschool and
into college. If anybody has any comments
can they give some examples of some good safe vehicles
out there? such as model and year?

Thanks Much!! : )

As an insurance agent, I can tell you that a teenager driving any SUV will pay higher insurance premiums than if he drove a car. The insurance companies do this because SUVs are generally not as safe as cars. In my opinion, the best bet for a teenager is a car with air bags (so not a real old car), and yet not a brand new car either. The repair bills on a newer vehicle will also be higher, but you said we should assume that cost is not a factor. Keep in mind that the flashier the vehicle, the more recklessly (generally) the teenager will drive.

Personally, I would go with a car. There are many cars out there with incredibly high safety ratings. The Kia Spectra (if I am not mistaken), has a very high safety rating. It also gets pretty good gas mileage. I myself drive a Toyota Corolla. My parents bought it for the family, but I mainly drive it. It is small, yet it has a spacious trunk and it suits my needs. I am a relatively new driver myself, so I suppose I have some say in this matter. Even though SUVs are more likely to "survive" in a crash, they are bulky and difficult to drive, thus your teenager may be more likely in causing a crash. That may not be true, but I recommend you test drive a few SUVs and a few cars and figure out which one would be most suitable. Will he be driving many people? Does he have a lot of stuff to lug around? Be practical.

I would say car they are a little smaller then SUVs and handle a little better. insurers might doable the rate also Some suvs have a higher accident rate it also depends on the driver age this your insurance company will take into a factor also when you buy insurance Snice is not realy about buget I would don't buy the that cost the mostsome cars cost almost as as suvs or even pick-ups have this person test drive some midsize cars or compacs and see which suits them the best

Honda is a really safe car manufacturer, old or new. For a car the civic or accord will do good, and get you awseome gas mileage, old or new. Suv's have a better crash test rating becuase they are general bigger which take up the impact better and taller which keeps lower riding cars from hitting the passengers. But remember almost all suv's are gas hogs and all still worse than most cars. Good luck on finding a car!

Yes a SUV is bigger and to an extent safer, I would say get a car.
Todays cars are so much safer, with air bags, antilock breaks and the like a car would be so much better.
I have been repairing cars for a verry long time and for the money and mine unless you plan on hauling a lot of things everyday,a car would give him better milage, and comfort.

A MID-SIZE car.

Rationale :
1) teenagers already have 'invinceability' syndrome to some extent ... giving them a cycle or an SUV is just a recipe for disaster for *most* kids. they get careless or over-aggressive and won't become talented 'good' drivers

2) a mid-size is usually more efficient than a large car
3) a mid-size car is easier to parallel park than something like the old (tank) ford ltds lol
4) can fit people comfortably into a mid-size as opposed to cramming teen friends into a small vehicle
5) a mid-size is safer in collisions than most small vehicles
6) a mid-size won't get stolen like a small sports car might
....
k that's enough u get the picture

I own a 1987 avert Dakota long mattress. i like my truck lots. each and every thing is instruction manual on it, previous crank abode windows, no bells no whistles. previous college. Very modest and sturdy. better section is that's there is no fee. It purely fee me $500 and a sparkling set of tires. the only turn away is the gasoline mileage. I used to force a civic, so the gasoline bill went way up while i offered the truck...whether that is incredibly worth it! yet another automobile...i don't be responsive to what i'd get. i will wait till I marry and have young ones insha'Allah.

Well, I think cars would be safer because you know when a teen gets a new vehicle they might want to show of if they have a SUV and they might get hurt. So cars are safer. But that's just my opinion.
