It's the amount of energy needed to raise one gram of water one degree celsius. What people actually count in their diets are kilocalories or Calories (with a big C). So 1 tsp of sugar is 16 Cal so it has enough energy to raise 1 kilogram of water 16 degrees C. How's that?

it's a measurement of energy.
1,000 calories = 1 Calorie
but you really don't need to know what it actually is.
(but if you see a fatty food that says it's 1000 Cal... dont eat it) lol ^^
