Well, the water has been around for about 4 billion years, so I think it will go stale next Tuesday.

Not very long....the seal on a milk jug wouldn't be very good since it's been used before. A better way to go would be to just buy sealed gallon jugs of water.

well not very long I'm afraid about two years max because the plastic of the container will break down and you could end-up ingesting some chemicals. However if it's the only water you have access to after a few days in the middle of nowhere drink up. Dehidration will kill long before trace amounts of chemicals will cause you a problem.

indefinitely. water does not waste so you could essentially keep it in a milk jug (I assume the plastic variety and not the glass kind) and leave it in the basement. will have to watch if anything settles or if there are some mold or other goodies in there germinating.

Indefinitely, I would imagine, as long as you keep it properly sealed. Water doesn't have a half life, and doesn't decay in any way that I know of.
