I think everyone should experience it once. That said, I will never do it again. If you go, take some water with you. It's not that bad a hike, I was not impressed with the view from there.

It's a fun hike starting from inside the crater. A few years ago it was free and you needed a flashlight to navigate through a couple dark spots (bunker tunnel and staircase). Now there's a cost and the bunker tunnel has new dimly lit lights. I think the cost is $1 per person if you walk in (1/4 mile+/-) from the main road through the roadway tunnel. The City transit bus stops on the main road if you want to catch a bus to the crater. If you drive into the crater and park, it's about $5 parking plus the $1 per person. Be sure to beat the crowd to get a parking space. The hike is all uphill (3/4 mile +/-) but not hard if you take your time. Right before you reach the top you have to make your way through a very small passage over a bunker wall. Not good if you got bad knees or if you're "husky". Remember that between 11:00AM and 1:00PM is the hottest part of the day. So be sure to go before or after these times if you don't like heat. Also, bring water. That all said, the end result at the top of Diamond Head is worth it. A cool breeze meets you at the top. Diamond Head summit offers the best Honolulu view of the breathtaking ocean and sky blues, the crashing surf, beautiful reef, the lush mountains, the panaromic view of the City of Honolulu and the residential areas, and the coastal view from Barbers Point to Portlock. You see all of this from this one place. Beautiful. The walk up takes me 45 minutes. The first 1/4 of the trail is concrete and the rest is dirt with some concrete steps and paths. My kids use to run up in 15 minutes when they were young soccer players. Going down is easy. PS... Caution: Don't climb the outside slope. Though it looks easy, it's deceptive and many got hurt.

Yes, it is an easy climb. The trail was recently renovated so the hike is even easier now. It takes less than 45 minutes (one way) if you take your time. Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, dark glasses and a camera. There is a public restroom at the bottom of the trail, near the parking lot so go before you start the hike! The view is amazing. You can really see why everyone dreams of going to Hawaii up there.
Go early. Hundreds of people visit daily. While tempting, don't leave the trail. The fire department frequently rescues people when they leave the trail and fall. Hawaii is expensive enough without a trip to the hospital!
Don't go if you have mobility problems. The hike, while easy, is not wheelchair/walker friendly.
Have fun!

Around 30 minutes to an hour. It's worth it and you can see the whole view of the city from the top...

I've never been myself, but my parents have. Apparently it's amazingly beautiful, but you have to go up there early to see the sunrise. And it's usually cold, so bring a jacket.
