I currently have a stand-up shower which is beginning to corrode and leak. I am having a contractor look at it, but he seems to think installing a new a bathtub would be the best bet. On average, how much should this cost?

It depends what type of bath tub you want. You are able to get a one piece tub which comes with the wall and everything, it is made of fiberglass though, not that durable.(cost $309.00 around) You are able to get a bathtub alone which can be steel (don't recommend because it will rust on ya cost $ 99.00) cast iron (very durable and keeps the heat in better for baths cost $399.00) it all depends what you want and how to install your tub. If you want to put tile in yourself you can look for affordable tile at a hardware place. I would suggest to look at other contracters, see what they think or install it yourself, it would be a fun project to do.

It's not a simple job and it won't be cheap, you're probably looking at some major remodeling. Talk to several different contractors first, ask to your friends and relatives and make sure you get a reputable contractor that warranties his work....However, as a plumber with 30 years in the trade I can tell you that is generally less expensive (not cheap but cheaper) to replace a shower pan or shower stall than to replace it with a tub....get more opinions before letting this guy do the work

It all depends on where you live and how many hours are involved. From a standup to a tub there will be a lot of carpentry involved. I am retired from the construction trade and I do remodeling in our community. I do it because I spent most of my working years on construction and it is hard to get away from it. I charge people according to what they can afford. I donate my time on projects also. I was an iron worker, but it is all a building trade.

Well, let's just say that the contractor makes a lot more money if he talks you into a lot more work. I'd recommend talking to several more contractors and do not mention the bathtub idea unless they bring it up first.

If you're gettin a disposal, might as well go all out and get an oven and dishwasher racks installed, too. Take care of everything that needs doin' in one go. .
