I know the trick of buying, then returning..but I was wondering if anyone knew of any places that rented them out.

Not sure of your gepgraphic location, but in Los Angeles and Orange Counties there are lots of places that rent this sort of equipment. It is obviously the more serious gear and not your average video camera that one whould acquire at the neighborhood Best Buy. If your looking for just a video cam, then the first answer is best to see if a friend has one you can simply borrow.

Honestly, you'd probably be better off just buying a cheap one. By the time you find a reputable place with high-quality gear to lease from, you're sure to have a headache. I know of some places here in Austin that might, but I can guarantee the fees (and deposit) will be just as much as the purchase price. Many places now require a higher deposit because people weren't bringing back the goods.
(Have you considered borrowing a web cam and laptop?)
