It is a matter of choice. I prefer Bombay Sapphire.

Martini and Manhattan drinkers are the fussiest bar patrons in the world.

Contrary to the popular James Bond cliche, martinis should be very lightly stirred and NEVER shaken.

Shaking bruises the gin by aeration. Oxygen violently changes the delicate flavor of gin which gets its distinctive flavor from the juniper berry. If a martini is cloudy, it is ruined.
Only a very light aroma of Vermouth should be noticed and enjoyed in a martini. That is best done by a very gentle stir.
Professional bartenders wince in horror when they watch an amatuer shake a martini or manhattan.

Once in New York, I watched a bartender dance and dazzle while he juggled and spun his cocktail shaker that contained my martini. His display lasted a very long time. For over a minute he shook and tossed, and flipped that shaker in the air. All the time he held my attention with a sexy gaze and sly smile. I smiled back, impressed by his moves. However, I knew my martini would taste like sh*t after his circus act. He opened his shaker and proudly strained my martini into the glass. He raised his eyebrow with a look that said, "How did you like THAT, babe?"

I got up and left.

Later, I found a professional bartender.

If you are looking for the best gin to use for a "Perfect Martini", which is actually the name of the drink that uses gin with a dash of both sweet vermouth and dry vermouth, I would use Tanqueray 10 because of its slightly sweeter finish which blends better with the sweet vermouth...although I wouldn't recommend this drink to anyone who actually likes martinis.

If you are looking for a gin that will make a martini that is perfect, you should either look to Bombay Sapphire, or, if you are able to afford it, Van Gogh Gin.

For the martini that I consider perfect, I strain my chilled gin into a vermouth swirled glass on top of 2 bleu cheese stuffed olives.

Salut!

Bombay Sapphire, because it has the highest percentage of aromatic oils and flavorings. Assuming, of course, that you like it. The concept of the perfect martini is somewhat problematic, though. There's this joke that goes like this...

During WW2, a Major is inspecting the survival kits of the pilots in the squadron he commands. Along with flares, first aid kits, and radios he finds a bottle of gin, a flask of vermouth, and a jar of olives. Furious, he calls over the Lieutenant whose plane these items were found in. "How in Hell are these going to help you back to civilization!", he splutters. "Well, sir", the Lieutenant drawls, "it doesn't matter how remote, or isolated, or forsaken the place I crash land is. Desert, mountains, jungle, tundra, wherever, all I need to do is start to make a Martini and SOMEBODY will pop out and tell me I'm doing it all wrong".

I've always used/asked for Bombay Sapphire until recently when hotel bar were I was staying was out of it. I decided to try Tanqueray which was even smoother than my usual...I have now converted.
I do drink my martinis dry and up. So, I suppose that it depends a bit on how you like yours. They are both good London Dry's so I would suggest that, before investing in a bottle of either, you go to an establishment that makes a good martini and try one of each. FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY, I'M SURE...
You may need a taxi...this is my kind of research!
Enjoy.

I personally prefer Bombay Sapphire, but it has the most taste due to what they add. Others like Tanqueray instead, which is also very good. There are some other new Super Premium which can be found. It all depends upon your taste, which you might find change over time.

Go on a research mission and try both....or just buy a bottle of each and enjoy in the cosy confines at home.
