I would suggest a yorkie poo. They are good, they have the poodle in them so the shedding is maintained. A miniture yorkie is good, and a French Bull dog is great. Papillions are also good dogs that are not big barkers. All of these breeds do not bark a lot, but you will also need to train your pup not to bark. I would also suggest crate training your pup. If you are going to be gone for long periods during the day, you do not want your baby to have free run of the house. Puppies will find those things you have dropped, lost, or misplaced from weeks and tears ago!
I provided some links below for you to read on each of the breeds suggested. I would also consider NOT to bring another dog into the house until your other passes. A new pup or rescue pup can cause more stress on your older dog, plus it is not fair to bring a replacement into your home with your other baby still alive.
Good luck!!! I hope you find a good one!!!

I will second the advice to avoid a Jack Russell.
Many of them are very active. I have one and he's still hard to control at 5 years old. Some ideas are: Brussels Griffon (not supposed to bark much), Schipperke (rumored to be the best house dog), Basenji, Pug, French Bulldog, Boston Terrier. The last three may breathe loud or snore, due to having snub noses.
Please keep in mind that there are some great dogs at shelters everywhere. Most of them are "known quantities", in that the shelter folks can tell you how they behave, whether they are house broken in their kennel, whether they get along with kids, cats, etc., and what level of training they have.
Have fun finding your new dog!

Any breed of terrier. You have to get them clipped every few months (thy don't shed at all) I grew up with a scottie terrier, they are small and generally very friendly. However knowing you have a ferret, I'm not sure how it will go they were originally bred for hunting rats. But if you get it as a puppy, I'm sure the two fo them would get along. I remember our scottie did not bark much. I think the personality will play into this more than the breed itself.

Don't get a Jack Russell. I have three and they are a handful. Alot of people like them cause they are small and cute, and they see them on tv. But the dogs on tv are highly trained. I'm not sure what is a good dog for you to get that is small and doesn't run off, and shed. GOOD LUCK!!!

i would say a yorkie. i don't think they shed but their hair keeps on growing so you'll have to take it to get groomed and the are small and very cute. I hope you find a nice puppy that you like. I have a pikineese puppy they are small and very cute but they do shed.

I lost my dog of 12yrs last yrs, and we decided to get another dachshund they are very loving and devoted dogs, they bark but they are barking let you know someone is around the home. If you give them love they will give you love back.
