mimicking is a helpful way to get familiar with the manner of speaking (like others have suggested, watch godfather, goodfellas, or whatever floats your boat). pay attention to phonetics, that is, the way things are pronounced. for instance, a "t" in english is very light, whereas in italian, you put your tongue against the back of your front teeth and make a thick "th" sound. also, they have no "a" sound as in "spAde" or "Ate." their "a" sound of course, varies just like english, but is more elongated and jaw-dropping. "cafe" is NOT pronounced "cah-fay," it's "kaa-fei."

as you can probably tell, it's pretty hard describing this stuff in sentence form. this site explains phonetics in more detail, check it out: http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/modlang/carasi/OPP/phonetics/italian-phonetics.htm

to be honest it doesn't exist a proper "italian accent" and this due to our regional and provincial history that present lot of languages mostly derivating from the latin but developed in many different ways.
of course we have our national language but when a person's talking is pretty difficult to do not hear an accent that show where the person come from. even at the tv news is possible to understand if the journalist come from at least north, central or south italy.
i wouldn't get you on the wrong way with this but the mark of the accent is generally a strong print we've got when we talk. anyway if you got the chance to follow tv news on tv that is the correct accent to follow.
