I always have compassion for people that are homeless, dealing with addictions, starving. Why cant we all be that way? Why cant we band together and do something about these problems? For those who dont, remember, that homeless guy on the street could be you!

Good for you, this shows you are only human...
But to answer your ques.: people are who they are because of the examples that were set for them. and the ones brfoe them. Sad to say that we are only human and our self takes over our lifes in every aspect because we do not take the time to sit and listen to others. So what if the person has no place to lives, lacks a shower, is an addict. They just want a ear taht is willing to listen to a story or to. If we just take a minute from our own lives we would discover that homeless people aren't always addicts, jut in a bad situation and are stuck in a rut.
know., I've been there many times in the years. Ate out of trash cans, been in shelters, recovery homes, missions, drug infested areas of LA, no shower, just the clothes on my back. Survival of the fittest of the streets. They can turn you into a monster. Imean your attitude gets bad, you don' care anymore, nobody wants you around because you are homeless. You discover very quickly who your true friends are in this world whrn you are down and out. I know bevcause I was an addict/ HOMELESS. Now today I am clean and sober and work for the Gov't whom I onced lived of of....
Keep the Faith

People generally have compassion, what we don't have is solutions. If we give a homeless guy a dollar or a hundred even, does that get him off the street? What do we do?

That is a good honest question and deserves a good honest answer.
There are no more compassionate people in the world than Americans.Americans have given their lives in many wars because they felt compassion for those who cried for freedom.
Americans give more of their money than anyone on earth towanrds helping every nation on earth in soem way.
Americans donate more of their time towards helping others than any country on earth.
Americans allow laws which hurt us (like the free trade agreement which is't so free) to aid in the suffering of others, and to help them advance to freedom and away from war.
It's true that many of the homeless are in no way responsible for their condition, but it also is true most of them shun offers to pull themselves out of their terrible condition.
Most homeless got that was due to drugs, and alcohol use, and see no reason to change when they could. If you know of a homeless family there is help for them.

I believe most people have compassion. It's just that we have mistrust for the most part. During a period of disaster though, many people display compassion to help the needy through donations, voluteer service, etc.

I am glad to hear that you are compassionate, too. Some people are so caught up in their own lives, that they don't even want to look at the less fortunate, let alone do something about it.

Yes, I agree. If we all did something, we could help lessen these problems.

Because people have to have some sort of better inner moral core, and that is something that can't be taught but has to be learned and experienced.

I know more people who do then people who don't - who do you hang out with? In fact, most people I know are extremely compassionate, sensitive to those around them & generous.
