SeeTheLigth: Buddha told his wife he was leaving for a while, and she agreed to it. After he reached enlightenment his wife and son became his disciple, in fact his wife was his first woman disciple. He did not abandon them. His father wanted him to become a warlord, so he left.

Pangel: The service part means to simply help someone in need, to treat others with kindness and compasssion:
"One act of pure love in saving life is greater than spending the whole of one's time in religious offerings to the gods . . . "

Millions of followers have trumpeted this high ideal, and where is the renewal? His name was cherished by hundreds of generations of men, but who are the true worshippers? This is the undeniable truth, but you know why mankind refuse to accept it?
It is because we believers keep on quoting it without understanding its true meaning, and keep on teaching by lip repeating (or more easily by clicking buttons!) instead of performing sacrificial deeds.
Let us pray the Lord Buddha to give us guidance in order that we understand clearly His teachings and put them into more concrete practice.

Well, following Buddha's text has made me a happier person. I am living proof that Buddhism works. I just need to work on my "kind speech" sometimes.

My thoughts. He's absolutely right - these things are the very best we can do to renew ourselves. However, sadly, they are also not enough.

Teaching of the person who abandoned his family: wife and newborn son, dad and step mom...nice thought though.
Jesus was teaching something like this too, only He was sinless. And He got killed.

OMGZ JESUS SEZ THE SAME THING!
Really He did.
Perhaps....perhaps....maybe....ALL MAJOR RELIGIONS ARE BASICALLY SAY THE SAME THINGS?!?!! Lead a good life, be kind to others, give back to your community...wow revolutionary ideas I'd say.

Those things are nice to do, but they won't do squat for your soul on judgement day.
