Russian comes from Greek, just like English comes from Latin. But English and Russian have some similiar letters because Latin actually came from Greek.

They use a similar alphabet because St. Cyril (a Greek Orthodox missionary) invented the "Cyrillic" alphabet originally for Bulgarian. It was later spread to other Slavic Orthodox religious communities. The languages are somewhat related (both are Indo-European, along with English, French, Hindi, Urdu, and many others) but the relationship is fairly remote.

Steve is correct; I'd like to add that the Rus (precursor to the Russians) also had the Byzantine Empire as their first major trading partner. I'm sure it didn't hurt to have similar alphabets when dealing with the Greeks.

so called cyrillic alphabet, used by russian, derives from the glagolitic alphabet invented by san cyrillus as an adapted form of byzantine greek. so of course they are similar, one derives from the other!
