Why is it different? Also, why hasn't the field defined the different roles & responsibilities of early childhood leaders or the academic preparation & support needed to carry these out established yet?

Because form follows function. Education isn't like other fields, so we structure it to best accomplish the goal of teaching kids.
I'm not sure I understand the rest of your question, but we often have programs to recognize leaders such as student government. But realize education is for teaching kids; socializing them comes as a side benifit, but it's not the primary goal.
