If the Pope is a conduit to God, then by saying sorry they are in effect saying God is wrong.
After all, in the eyes of the Church, God picked the Pope.
If the Pope made a mistake, he was only relaying Gods word.
If God was right, why are the Cardinals apologising?

Don't give me that 'ex cathedra' cop out!
So he can pick and choose?
He either has Gods ear or he doesn't!
There's always small print in the Catholic Church!

Williamzo: I know the Pope never said sorry. The cardinals did though. That's the point I'm making. Read the question properly please.

'ex cathedra'??
What a load of mumbo jumbo BS, why don't we conduct this debate in Latin, or ancient Egyptian text?
I suppose there must be a few people left on earth that really believe all this mystic cra*!!
Not much point in trying to introduce a bit of logic here is there?
Your question was clearly designed to make the Christian Catholics annoyed! (That bit , 'Christian Catholics' really vexes the Christians, they mostly think Catholics are not 'true' Christians)!
However, I digress, the Pope is not infallible, he is in fact just an ordinary feller with a very cushy little job, he should have enough brains to do his job which to my mind is to try and keep the peace at least, whether he was right or wrong in what he said or whatever 'context' it was meant to be in , he was certainly not helping to keep the peace or going any way to foster good relations with the Muslims.
What sort of a show is he running? What were all his 'advisers' doing letting him come out with all that drivel??
I don't think for one minute that you were expecting any sort of logical replies, but your question has in some way pointed out the hypocrisy of religion, pity others cant see it!! Still very nice try, I enjoyed reading the 'squirming' replies!

Ahh maybe you should read the dogma it states that the pope is only infallible ex-cathedra at the seat of St. Peter... he might represent God but he's not perfect and he can fall into sin or say something wrong aswell ... the reason he is apologizing is because (he apologized just to note on sunday if you didn't here) that doesn't mean he denys that he believes what he says is the truth he just appoligizes for making them mad...anyways so The infallibity of the Pope only means that if he were to speak from the chair of St. Peter it would be impossible by the power of the Holy Spirit we don't know how but we know that it be impossible that's are belief about Papal Infallibility

It seems the Catholic explanation is something like this: the Pope is infallible when he is saying something that is not wrong.

Can't the same be said for anyone though?

By the way, God is not wrong, but the Pope is many times! I don't believe the Pope speaks for God. I believe the inspired word of God is the Bible. God speaks through the Bible, not through the Pope or any other man who says anything that contradicts the Bible.

The Pope is not officially infallible. Only when he speak "ex cathedra" is the statement considered infallible.

[edit] Don't call our mentioning "ex cathedra" a cop out. I'm not even remotely Catholic. You're just embarrased for asking such an ignorant question. Not our fault.

The Pope stated the truth. He even quoted what he said and it is infact the truth. So why did he apollogize especially when it didn't accomplish anything. The Muslims are stiull raising hell. All his apollogy did was show the Muslims that he's a whimp and they now know that he will back down from them. Them Muslims will use any damn reason they can to protest something. They aren't really protesting at all. What they are doing is rallying their troops. Getting them all worked up. They even go so far as to kill an innocent woman as retrobution. Can't anybody, namely our governtment, see whats happening. Everytime they protest something they also kill someone. What's going to happen when they decide to protest the United States of America from within the US of A? Can't anybody see whats going to happen in the not so distant future if something isn't done? You might say "never happen". Well those that think that way better take another look. They are now at 6 million strong and are still pouring in by the bus loads every day. Do you think they are coming to the land of the people they hate and want to kill just to have a picnic? Why won't our government close the borders and quit letting those Muslims in? We need to start sending them back to where they came from before its to late. Hell it might be to late allready. Once they start their war or whatever its going to be called does the president think he is untouchable or what? The best way to defeat your enemy is take out its leaders first. Am I the only one who thinks like this? If our own government won't do something to secure our country maybe we should?

If he's infallible then he was right to have said it and the cardinals are wrong to apologise. It's them you should be criticising. Obviously, God wants to start another almighty row between the Roman Catholics and the Muslims and the cardinals are getting in the way.

*Sigh*

No one has ever claimed that any Pope is completely infallible. They are only infallible when speaking "ex cathedra". There is only a small number of statements by Popes that are considered "infallible"...but I've never seen them written down on a last anywhere.

Popes are not infallible. The Doctrine of Infallibility ONLY applies to statements spoken "ex cathedra." There have only been a very few statements spoken that way.

Many years ago, as an inquisitive boy, I asked a similar question. A nun told me the Pope was infallible ONLY when making pronouncements on dogma (not when quoting someone else).

They did a thorough investigation and found that the coaxial cable connecting the pope's head to god's got a little wet that day and the communication didn't go through correctly (it's all fixed now). God was saying something like 'Go play badminton' and it came through to the pope as 'Tell those muzzies that they're evil and that they smell'. Go figure.
