It's also part of the tradition.

The Japanese bride will change her outfit three or four times during the wedding. First, a white kimono is worn to show the bride's willingness to adopt the groom's family. Her head must be covered to hide horns of jealousy. She then changes to a Western style wedding gown. Next she dons a multi colored kimono - a furisode, for the reception. Finally she will change into a Western-style ball gown.

So you ask why? They are respecting their heritage, and by doing so spending money to keep traditions alive that could be easily lost with immigration and displacement.

Because instead of presents Asians give money so they end up getting a few thousand dollars to offset the cost of the wedding.

Everyone who has the money spend plenty of the money on weddings. My aunt had a wedding and spent close to 70,000 dollars on her wedding. Which, to me, was too much, but it was what her and her husband wanted. As long as people are happy, they will take mortgages out on houses, get loans, whatever to have the wedding they want.

I'll tell you why. I just finish coordinating my friend's wedding. Asian parents are proud of the fact that their kids are getting married that they ended up inviting all of their friends and the neighbors. I'm talking about people that neither the bride nor the groom even know. The bride and groom may have invited their family and friends of 50-75 and paying about $50-$125 per person at the reception alone. But with the parents wanting to invited their own friends and their friend's family, the guest list can increase up to 250 people. That's like $30K+, not counting the attire, rings, ceremony, flowers, cake, location fee, honeymoon, gifts, etc.. It's insane!

They want to make sure they keep the upkeep of their family name. Asian people have pride in their families and also are concern about others think of them. I have had many Asian friends who have nice houses and cars, but go in the house and it is empty. They like to keep up appearances.
