Since you prefer family, do you have teen/young adult siblings or neices/nephews/cousins that are willing to sit? They are someone you know, your child knows and are familiar with how you run your house. Offer then whatever the going rate is for sitting in your area (you should always pay your sitters...even grandma and grandpa should get a small token of thanks since they won't take $$!) and enjoy your time out.

If that isn't an option, talk to people in the neighborhood, your church, your daycare center. Find out who they use. Call the sitter and talk to them over the phone about what you are looking for (how often, how long you are usually gone, etc.). If you like the sound of them, ask them over to meet you and your child. Find out about their experience level (don't be afraid to ask for the names and numbers of other parents they have sat for), when they last took any first aide class and what their plans are for emergency situations. If all is still good, set up one or two "mother's helpers" afternoons. The sitter will come over and spend time with the children while you are in the house, but not involved directly with them. Of course, you will pay them for this time. This will let you see how well everyone gets along and give you more time to get to know them. Your first time out should be a short one...running some errands, a quick lunch or cup of coffee with friends, etc. Don't choose your office holiday party that will last until the wee hours for a first experience! Build up to it. My bet is in the end you'll find yourself with a sitter you can trust, your kids adore and you'll get some sorely needed time out with grownups!

I did the craigslist and got a great one - you can also find your local nanny service and go that route if you have the money. Or post something on your mailbox that you are looking for good teenage babysitters that live within walking distance of your house or have drivers licenses. I have several great ones in my neighborhood. You can even find someone who has been certified.

I am exactly the same as you! I have only left my son with family. If you belong to a church, you may be able to find someone there to watch your child for a few hours, or maybe the daughter/son of a friend that is responsible??

I would perfer family, cuz you just trust them more. And also don't make your evenings out too frequent, and they'll be more then willing to do it.We have a 11/2 yr.old, and we have only brought her away twice for some "our" time.

babysitters.com allows you to view resume's and set up interviews. Also, if you attend a church, there are usually always some well-behaved highschool kids that are great with kids and could use a few extra bucks

Maybe you can ask friends or even family that has kids who they use and maybe they can recommend some one. Some cities have agencies.
