If you are looking for a flat panel then your choices are still slim, eventhough prices are still coming down. Sam's and Costco have a 50" HDTV Plasma by Vizio for 1988.00. DLP's start at 1300 and up, however they are projection TV's and are 17-20" deep. Older technology projection TV's are even less. However, before shelling out $1300 -$2000 for a "boob tube", go to Best Buy or Circuit City, etc and compare the different technologies. There is huge difference in picture clarity between a plasma and a projection TV especially from the side. Good Luck.

The only thing you might find that large in that price range would be a CRT-type rear projector. I don't recommend that; those sets are becoming obsolete, and can't compete in picture quality with LCD, DLP or Plasma. You would have to come down to a 37" or less flat screen to stay in that price range. If it came to a choice, I would go for the smaller screen, even though at that size you are not getting the max benefit of HDTV.
