I am going to see The Color Purple at 2pm and I need to know if I can wear jeans or if it has to be sunday best.

Especially at a matinee, it really doesn't matter, although this is kind of a peeve of mine: I've noticed that in the last few years, everyone's dressing down to go to the theater. It's starting to spread: I saw a guy wearing jeans and a sweatshirt to the philharmonic! That strikes me as inappropriate, but no one's gonna kick you out if you've got a ticket.
Most theater-goers wear, like, khakis and a nice shirt.

i never been to an early show so i always get dressed up. if you want to wear jeans go ahead but pair it with nice shoes and a pretty top so it doesnt look to casual. i wouldnt worry about the dress code though cause if u have a ticket they dont care you could go in your pjs lol

Me - I'd definitely wear jeans. Some people will dress up, however. I personally am quite comfortable being undressed. No one will stare or saying anything to you.

People only 'Dress Up' if its a special event like a premiere.

Jeans are fine, try and do a little better than just a t-shirt though.....
There's no reason -not- to dress up if you enjoy that.....

um..i've been to two shows in NYC and people mostly dress nice, so i don't think i would wear jeans but its up to you.

You can wear jeans... all of the tourists come in looking like garbage anyway... jeans is DEFINITELY better than shorts... my lawwwd!
