ok, i have been home schooled for 11 years, and am in 11th grade. i do a lot of the legal paper work my self too. what you need to do is find the number for your state's department of non-public education. they will send you a form and you fill it out, atach a copy of your high school degree, and then you are ready to go. i recomened buying your books from rainbow resource center. you can go on line to rainbowresource.com to find out about ordering stuff. i never go with a "set curlicum" because there is nno real adventure in learning that way. i buy (my parents pay for it, but i choose it) whatever looks like a fun book for my age group on the subject i need.
ps spelling has never been my strong point, but i dont lack in any other subject. and i am at the 94% national reading level.

Laws differ from state to state. You do NOT need to go through your school board in most cases. And in most cases you wouldn't want to. In many places you can use the materials available at your local school but you probably won't want to do that either. There are many homebased curriculums available that are sooo much better than anything you'd find in the school system. Why home school if you are just going to use the same texts and boring worksheets? With my children we sit down for math and reading but all other topics are hands on. We don't use text books. I have a great site that can tell you the laws according to your state. See below.
Good luck. I hope it works out for you. Home schooling is a great alternative to the mess that has become the public school system. I say this as a former teacher. And don't let anyone make you feel like you are keeping your child in a cage. My children have friends and are involved in clubs and sports. They are also brighter than their peers and have a love for learning that gets zapped out of many kids.
Message me for more links if you need to.

Since you are new to homeschooling, I would recommend using the Christian Liberty Academy. When you enroll, they will mail you the books you need for 8th grade. You mail the tests and reports to them. Your child will be legally a student of that school.
Also check out Home School Legal Defense. They will know the laws for your state.

Ask your district, it is legal to do it. Basically you go to this main teacher to get your work, then you do it at home, and give it to your teacher. You get all the books you need and also the Answer Books. All tests are taken at the school however, for obvius reasons. You kid(s) work on their own time. They may NOT get the social experiacne however, but can actulally do their work so fast they can have 3-4 day weekends!!! They can even surpass their grade if they let you.

You have to go through your local school district. When they turn 8 they have to start taking tests to make sure that they are actually learning what they need to be...my sister-in-law just did the testing with her oldest daughter. Check out books at your local library. There are several books on homeschooling.

where r u located? laws vary depending on where u live.
as long as u don't have a bunch of laws that will get in your way it's quite simple. here in MI parents have the right to determine 100% of their childs education and can do so with no interference from the state/schools. some states require specific subjects to be taught and/or testing of the child to ensure that they are learning.
i would suggest that u look in yahoo groups for a home schooling group in your area. they can be helpful by providing not only info, but also activities and classes that help to provide your child with socialization.
the link below will help you to know what your local laws are.
anyone who gives u specific info isn't taking into consideration that we don't know where u live.
