honestly. the pope gets a bad rap for quoting a 14th century general, and pointing out that people will say things like this general did, such as "islam is evil and inhuman" if you wage war for religion. so by making the point that fighting to convert others and kill those that practice other religions is bad, the pope is being yelled at by huge numbers of muslims.

why? why is it that jews and christians get bashed, even by world leaders, constantly, but when a cartoon is drawn or something minor said, the radical muslims use it as an excuse to blow up churches and set nuns on fire? to threaten the pope with death?

it seems to me that because of its tendency to get extremely radical, militant fanatical islam is a major obstacle to freedom.

share with me your thoughts on this issue, and how the large population of sane, loving, peaceful muslims can help reign in this violent tendency of their radical brothers.

I think the radical Muslims we see on the nightly news, burning everything in effegy, are a small, yet extremely vocal minority. I think it is also important to note that many of these people are in countries without a free press, so they are seeing and hearing small sound bites of what their governments want them to see-- regarding the Pope's speach, the US and other aspects of the West. They are horribly manupulated, lied to and told that the West wants them dead. Which is simply not true. It should also be noted that the protests against what the Pope said began days after, not immediatly after his speech. The same thing happned with the Danish political cartoons. Those cartoons were published in November of 2005, the riots didn't start till February of 2006...how's that for media and government manipulation?

I also think that these riots are used as a propaganda tool of the Islamofacist dictators in countries like Syria and Iran, and radical mullahs and imams to throw the foucus off of their own despotism and horror they inflict on their people. If they can get their masses to hate the United States, Christians, the Pope, or whoever, the people are not focused on their lack of rights, and the oppression that they live under. Blaming the West is a much easier cop-out that really chaning the horrible conditions and totalitarian regiems under which these poor people live.

I say that radicalism is not a major roadblock, but is the main roadblock to freedom in the Middle East. And I cannot say this enough, the dictators, mullahs and imams who preach this hate and radicalism do so only as a means of self preservation. They know that if given the choice their followers would not follow them and would choose democracy, freedom and a more moderate form of Islam.

Perhaps the saddest thing is though, that not enough moderate Muslims are speaking out, or are not being given the same ammount of air time by the Western media to voice their opinions. The problem with not speaking out is that, most people in the West are slowly starting to believe that radical Islam is the only Islam. If they don't rise up and say no to the fanatics they will find themselves grouped in with the rest of us infidels.

That is not the case ... It just seems that way because you are a sheep... Part of a flock aren't you?

There are a number of things about your statements that scream "MY BRAIN IS BROILED IN WRONG SAUCE!"

First the comment about the Pope being chastized for making the quote is on it's face ignorant. Considering what the early Catholic church did to anyone not professing belief in Christianity makes even 9-11 look pretty tame. Look up the inquisition! His making that tie to Islam is like Bill Clinton saying after the fact that Lewinsky raped his cigar.

As far as freedom is concerned well examine your own life ... Are you really free? Try saying bomb and Washington on your phone.

Baaaahhhhh

You can say the same about Judaism and questioning the holocaust. I think it's the abuse of freedom of speech that gets people angry. Especially when double standards play a role. Why do people rise rise to criticize Muslims for expressing their displeasure with what the pope said, isn't that freedom of speech?
Now, I 'm not talking about the violent protests that have no sanctions in Islam. I am talking about the amount of criticism Muslims get for sticking up for their faith peacefully and yes, the majority of protests are done in peace. Unlike you I don't give extremist of my faith an excuse for what a few did to those churches and that nun. Islam gives zero tolerance to those who attack places of worship, and people of worship and specifically mention churches and synagogues in the Quran. The Prophet said anyone who harms a non-Muslim is as if he harmed the Prophet himself. I hope the criminals who do such crimes are punished for their bad deed and to set an example to those who create mischief.

Many religious people take great exception to anything that they think is insulting, irreverent, contemptuous, or lacking respect for their religion. It is called blasphemy. There was once a death sentence for blasphemy in nearly every European country. In the West, we had "The Enlightenment" that changed all of that. In the Islamic world there has never been an "Enlightenment" although there are great differences in Islamic theological thought. It is as diverse as Protestantism. The more passionate Islamic fundamentalists are the ones who riot and they are joined by others who just enjoy a good riot.

Actually there are plenty of Muslims discouraging violence, but unfortunately that isn't as provocative and "interesting" as the isolated incidents of extreme violence being commited by the psychopathic loose cannons who are brainwashed with the Al-Queda mentality so popular among angry young Muslim men who are all dressed up with no one to fight...so it doesn't get much air time.

P.S. I'm Catholic and seeing an effigy of the Pope burning surrounded by a crowd of angry brain-dead fundamentalists made me almost want to sign up for the Army so I could roast those pigs with a flamethrower, but then I calmed down and remembered what Jesus taught us to do in cases like this.

Peace!

because islam is not a religion of freedoms. I suspect that the only thing most of those rioting know is what their religiousleaders have told them, and that would be that the Pope has slurred Mohammed and that they are to kill all catholics. Hell, they don't even recognise that there are more than one Christian religion. even though they have 3 or4 different sects themselves

islamic leaders are killers and teach their followers to be killers in the name of God.the pope uses the church orginazation to hide the killing the catholic church does so there isn't much difference.
the pope needs to stand his ground, but the Bible says that a house of satan divided among itself can not stand. so the catholic church upsetting the islamic community wont stand long.
