I know of a family that had a similar problem and they solved it quite nicely. First, there was never a big deal made about the weight issue. This age is very vulnerable and you don't want to create self-esteem issues. Rather, this family made a pact that they would eat healthy. The little girl bucked this at first even throwing up her veges at first...it was quite a bit of drama. However, consistency goes a long way along with positive reinforcement. The family stuck to their guns and ate very lean but healthful dinners. The mom packed healthy lunches for school. Furthermore, they got more active. The mom started playing with the daughter outside and the family started growing a big garden (yes it was in the city!). The results were amazing. Not only did the whole family lose weight, but the daughter's health problems such as ear infections stopped completely.

Well, I watched in admiration and continued to stay close to the family. Now, that once chubby little girl has grown up and is a mom herself and has never become overweight again. I hope that this true story is helpful. Just keep trying positive tactics that focus on health rather than appearance. That is empowering! Good luck to you!! :)

Better review all of the food items in your kitchen. There must be or has been a lot of unhealthy food items. She certainly did not get fat if there was not junk food in the house. I hope she does not double her weight in 11 years!
Only buy healthy foods and eliminate soft drinks. Drinking lots of water helps out and lessens the hunger pains for some time. Have everyone in your household try to eat more healthy and get plenty of exercise as well.

First go to the doc to make sure there is nothing medically wrong with her that is causing the weight problem.

If everything is ok help her find a passion. Preferably something active like swimming or dancing. If she does this consistently she is on the way to lose weight. Also this will build her self esteem and if her self esteem is high she will want to take better care of herself more instead of letting herself go.

take away the TV, computer, video games, all sedentary activities and make her play outside!!! does she have a bike or skates or a jump rope? make her use them everyday!

what the hell is she eating? throw out all the junk in your house, no cookies, chips, soda, candy, etc, load up on fruits and veggies and have her snack on healthy food every 3 hrs or so to get her metabolism running more efficiently, this means you may have to change what/how you cook along with getting her to be more active to get her back to a healthy weight (she weighs over 20 lb more than me and I'm 26!)

good luck, it's good you're trying to get a handle on her weight problem now before she goes thru puberty and it gets worse, hope you and your family can adjust to the necessary changes!

Be an example to her. Kids learn fromt heir parents, including attitudes about food.
Get the mindset that food is just fuel to keep you going, not the center of attention in your lives. Enough to curb the hunger pangs, then it's time to take a short walk together.

Make balanced meals. Don't buy any snacks or junk food. Give her fruit or celery or carrot sticks instead of chips or candy. Buy her a bike or skates. Get her outside and moving. You control what she eats so make sure it is healthy.

Eat healthy and exercise. She is going to have a hormone boost soon, and that will stimulate all kinds of biologic activity. But now is the time to get her to eat right and exercise.

Let her particape in more activities, running and jogging are quite good. Also don't let her eat too many fast foods. Fruits and veggies are much better for her.

Girls at this age tend to be in that stage where they aren't fully developed. Overtime, she may have a growth spurt to even out her weight.

Here is a workout/food plan that I'd say is safe for preteens and adults, maybe eliminate the weights though. Also, when the changes go into effect, be sensative and gentle with her. Kids have feelings, and you don't want to crush their confidence.

Getting rid of fat in general, building lean muscle, and defining your physique is 60% diet, 30% exercise, and 10% mental thought. You must eat the right foods, exercise more often than you don't, burn more calories than you consume, think and speak positively about yourself, try making life as stress free as possible, and get rest so that your body can repair itself.

Portion control is key to reaching your goal. You don't want to over-eat. A portion should be the size of your fist. Meals should consist of one portion of carbohydrates and protein, and a portion of fat (is: a handful).

Carbohydrates:
Apples, Bananas, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Mangos, Pineapple, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Celery, Carrots, Broccoli, Asparagus, Green Beans, Sweet Potatoes, Corn, Steel Cut Oatmeal, Whole "Grain" Bread.

Protein: Egg Whites, Salmon, Tuna, Halibut, Chicken Breasts, Lean Ground Turkey, Turkey Breasts, Protein Powder, Protein Bars (Power Crunch Bar, Cliff Builder Bar) You don't want a high calorie, high fat, high sugar bar. The two I listed are good ones, and they taste great too!

Fat: Organic Peanut Butter, "Raw" Almonds or Walnuts, Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing. (Only consume a handful of nuts, with your breakfast, lunch, and dinner.) Fats help with digestion.

You want to have 4-5 small meals per day. 2-3 hours apart. You will never go hungry and your metabolism will not slow down!Stop eating 2-3 hours before bed. If possible get 8 hours of sleep, this plays a major role in losing belly fat.

Meal Planning: (Preparation is key.)

Meal 1: Protein, Carb, Fat (1 bottle of WATER)
Meal 2: Protein shake or bar (A glass of WATER)
Meal 3: Protein, Carb, Fat (1 bottle of WATER)
Meal 4: Protein shake or bar (A glass of WATER)
Meal 5: Protein, Carb, Fat (1 bottle of WATER)

Drink half of your weight (or more) in oz. of water per day.
(ex: 120lbs = drink 60oz. of water per day.)

Exercise: (Arrange this plan to fit your schedule).

Mon- light weights upper body, 30-60 min cardio, and abs
Tue- cardio 60 minutes (power walk, run, elliptical, etc.)
Wed- light weights lower body, 20-30 min cardio, and abs
Thu- cardio 60 minutes (power walk, run, elliptical, etc.)
Fri- light weights upper body, 30-60 min cardio, and abs
Sat- cardio 60 minutes (power walk, run, elliptical, etc.)

It’s important to sign up to a gym, perhaps get a workout partner/personal trainer it offers motivation.

This is my plan that I have made after doing research. It has worked for me, and I've helped friends lose weight this way! If you stick with it, it eventually becomes a lifestyle. If you are going to eat junk food, do it in moderation. Eventually you won't even crave it.I like to keep my diet as natural and organic as possible. Multivitamins are also a good idea, just to help strengthen your immune system.

If you are looking for a health book that offers more information on food, fitness, meal planning, and motivation; I am a big fan of the "Body-for-LIFE" book as well as the "Eating-for-LIFE" cookbook. It is what got me where I am today, living a healthy and satisfying life.

If you have any additional questions or just want someone to talk with, feel free to e-mail me! I love talking about this stuff as you can see!
