Strengths:
- Cargo capacity is huge - any cargo ship can transport heavier loads than the largest cargo aircraft available
- Naval aircraft are ship-based, so they can operate much closer to operating theater without needing an airfield
- Able to conduct amphibious landings almost anywhere in the world - no need for ports or roads
- Weather can help hide operations

Limitations:
- Naval task forces need a lot of time to assemble and transit to their theater of operation. Task forces are limited by the speed of their slowest ships.
- A lot of self-defense capabilities are required to defend against an adversary's submarines, aircraft-launched missiles, and other surface ships
- Weather can hinder a lot of operations
- Provisions for refueling, rearming and resupplying (food, etc.) enroute can be very time-consuming. Often requires a long communication (supply) line
- Requires remote bases or visiting rights to be close to the action might be (Yokosuka, Japan; Diego Garcia lease from the UK, etc.)

strength: can get there en masse and pound the hell out of the shoreline before offloading ground components.
example: the ship based artillery barage of normandy during d-day.

weakness/limitation: slower than sin.
example:
AF: "Let's go to war, we'll carry the army"
Navy: "Alright, see you over there in three weeks."
