i am in the marine corps. i have stayed on ship before. it is diffarent for the 2 services though. but i can tell u a little. it depends also on what ship u are on. the ship i was on, harpor's ferry, wasn't fun at all. the beds are really small. and stacked 3 high. i lived in a room with about 60 people. phone use was available, but only on certain days and expensive. internet use was limited to 4 computers and there was always an hour wait or more. u have to wait for everything: internet, food, ship store, laundry. anywhere from 20min-90 min.
the benefits are going to port. u will get to see a lot of countries. there is nothing like going to a differant country every month. yet again, i am a marine so my experiances are differant than the navy aboard the ship.

Used to be. USS Bremerton (SSN 698), stationed in San Diego and Pearl Harbor.
Submariners don't live on board ship in port. Barracks life is ok. Underways are a hassle, but manageable (hope you like cleaning!). I got to work with some of the best men I've ever met and I have several close friends that I still keep in touch with 2 years later.

I am a former "squid". I liked ship life just fine. But on board a CV you have a tendancy to get lost a lot. I was on board USS Independence with VFA 192.
I enjoyed Shore life just as much.

Choose your rate, choose your fate. There is one rating in the Navy that does not have a Sea/Shore rotation, Crytologic Technician. If you want to fun of TAD's without the hassles of shipboard life, CT is for you.

As like Dark Wolf I was on the Independence when it was a CVA "attack aircraft carrier" it was great, just like a small city and when at sea everything was open 24/7.

Retired now, but loved the USS Midway (shows how old I am). Always going someplace new or visiting back with old friends.
