It depends on the result you are looking for. If you wish to have your hair curl "under" (giving you a softer, more classic look)--use a comb to pull a two inch section of your hair away from your head, next position the roller at the end of that section of your hair, then, slowly roll the hair "down" or "in" toward your scalp. For a more "flipped", "touseled" look, do the opposite--roll the hair up toward the scalp. Good luck.

It doesn't really matter, but I prefer to have the hair go over the top of the roller. That way when it's all the way at the root, I have some body on the top of my head, instead of having concave curls that stick to my head before curling upward.

It matters. Do you want Spiral Curls? Then you roll your hair sideways, for loose curls roll under and just half way up. For tight curls roll all the way to the scalp. Roll over creates a flip type curls.

If you want a flip then curl the rollers outwards.
For a curled under look curl the hair under or inwards.
For spirals curl vertically from top to bottom.

inwards if you want to make your curls curl away from your face, outwards if you want them to curl towards your face. but in all it doesn't really matter, they curled all the same.

I have an analogous style of hair, and that i opt to curl it outwards on the bottom of each layer. It makes your hair look finished and fluffy and it received't body your face too a lot. solid luck :)
