The same as it is in any other area. "To Protect and Serve", as I've always heard it.

In rural Mississippi, they are all about revenue generation. Road blocks, but they can't call them that, so they are "safety checkpoints".

They set them up at Interstate off ramps, county lines and high traffic areas after dark and check sobriety, license, registration, proof of insurance and safety stickers.

Going from one county to another on a Saturday night is like crossing the border between Germany and Austria. "Have you got your papers?" Well, you better, or they will cite you.

Other than that, if you are not a violent offender, they have no where to put you, as the jails are all full. They generally threaten, confiscate, and might take you on a back road and beat you bloody, especially if you are not their race and definitely if you are a Latino chicken plant worker.

Harassing residents with traffic citations. In the past 18 years there has been one homicide in our community. A hit-and-run driver killed a pedestrian. The case has not been solved.
But just try to go 40 mph in a 35 mph zone, and the police are on the job.

they are everywhere i can't walk or even drive to the store without seeing least one patrol. There role is to protect and serve, however there is this hugh roundup event that goes on for a week in town that more than doubles the population, so the number of cops is to match this. and the rest of the year they DON'T have anything better to do than to harass

To set up speed traps in areas that aren't dangerous, don't have a lot of wrecks where the speed limit is set a little too low.

"To Harass And Annoy"

To eat donuts, hog the tables at the local Italian restaurant when they should be out patrolling, get fat, and harass the taxpayers.
