Some people do and some people don't. You don't hear much about those who do learn the lessons of history because they don't make the same mistakes. You become very aware of those who don't learn the lessons of history. These are people who either know nothing of history or think they can make history up as they go along. The consequences of these myopic delusions are repeated disasters. President Bush was the worst case scenario- he knew nothing of history AND made it up and he went along.

No, we dont, civilizations come and go, all making the same mistakes, practically every nation on earth has a civil war at some stage, every Empire has peaked then fallen, every nation has experienced starvation, slavery, religious intolerance, rascism, dictatorships etc etc, however, things are a bit different these days, we have the internet, we can speak and learn from people all over the world, this has'nt made a big difference to the way governments or what/whoever is in power work just yet, but I feel it will, eventually, things are changing, slowly, but small acts can make big differences, understanding of our fellow man is the key, tolerance is the lock...

I wish we would. It doesn't seem that way, does it? It's a human trait to fight or flight. You would think that with all the intelligent minds in the world, we might think of going beyond that and learning by our mistakes.
In some ways we have. But, in some cases, we just don't have a choice. We either stand back and wait to see what happens or we defend ourselves. Most often the longer we stand back, the worse the out come. That we have learned from history.
The young people today need to know that there are truly a lot of "human heroes" out there. Today and yesterday. To try to form their lives around one - be one - for yourself and others.
You don't hear a lot about the good things and good people that there are, because it's just not news worthy, I guess. But, they are MORE prevalent then you think, right now. Look for them. You'll see that there are SO many great people out there and wonderful things going on. Attach yourself and make a difference too.

some words from w.d. gann:
"history proves that wars break out every 20 to 25 years. it also proves that there is a great wave of speculation and a boom of some kind in nearly every country every 20 to 25 years. why do these war periods and boom times come at such regular cyles or intervals? the main cause of these is that human nature never changes. every 20 years a new generation comes along. they are full of hope, optimistic and are progressive and up-to-date. they are inexperienced. they know nothing of war or of the bitterness of war, because they have never been in a fight. they are anxious to get into a fight. it is easy for the politicians to induce the young men to go to war, but it is hard toget the old fellows who have had the bitter experience and the suffering to go to war. they want no more of it. the young buck is wild and always ready to run and fight.
it is the same with the commodity market. the young generation either have inherited money or they make money, and they want to take a chance. it is the nature of youth to gamble, to take chances, and to be fearless of danger. Therefor, the young generation are anxious and eager to try their hands at speculation. when they get into a runaway bull market, they have no more sense than to keep buying. they throw caution to the wind. this increased buying power causes commodities to go to heights unwarrented by supply and demand. the result is that when this boom is over, the young generation suffer severe losses, get some valuble experience and are not so anxious to try it again."

Yes many of us do learn from the mistakes of the past. The reason being that many persons realise they cant live long enough to make them on their own. Many adults are too busy criticizing young people for mistakes that they dont take time out to praise them for the good that they do.

Yes, we learn - example no more fox holes, letting it be someone else's problem allowed Hitler to become so strong & etc.
The young are always right or so they think. They try to not look to others for knowledge, those older could not know more. They have the Internet.

Of course we learn from the mistakes of history.
I, myself, have learned, for example, that spilling Pepsi all over the worktop is not a good way to get rid of ants... And that only happened two hours ago...

We lost 58,000 brave Americans in Viet-Nam. The lesson was simple. Guerrilla warfare can not be won. Iraq is in civil war now, we have 147,000 brave Americans there now, we should pull out now.
In Afghanistan the opium crop is up 60 percent and the Taliban is regaining the control they lost. In dufar, Africa 300,000 civilians have been murdered.
