Often times, you won't hear anything unusual. The best way is to buy an electronic device that can sense if your phone is "bugged".

You can not tell. Today lines are not 'tapped' - the phone company controls the call from inside the network (like 3-way call) to a recording system when the phone is used. Later the police or FBI etc. review the recordings at their leisure. You will hear not clicks or strange noises like you see in the movies. If you hear cracks or clicks on your line - that is an old wire or bad connection somewhere from your phone to the telephone pole.

Not if it is done right.

Nowadays most taps are done away from the location anyways. Usually at a callbox down the street.
