I start decorating on Oct. 1. As far as pumpkins, I usually buy them now, draw what I'm going to carve, and set them on my porch. Normally, a carved pumpkin lasts about a week, but to keep it from "shrinking" put vasoline on the carved out parts. Also, you can spray the inside with pesticide if you live in a warmer enviroment, to keep fruit flies and nats from gathering around it.

Two weeks before Halloween is a good time to start with some decorations. Be careful about putting certain items outside too early because they could get damaged by the wind, rain, and even fade from too much sunlight. If you are a huge Halloween fanatic, you can even start around Oct 1st by putting seasonal items around in your home. Save the pumpkins for last because they get soft quite quickly once cut, and they make yummy snacks for squirrels, racoons, birds, and other critters too.

Once your pumpkins are carved, which shouldn't be more than a few days before Halloween, if they do get soft they can be revived by soaking them in cold water for a couple of hours.

The first decorations that I set up every year are mini pumpkins (and squash) in little baskets with festive ribbons. These can be placed inside or outside. Happy Halloween!

I usually start between October 20-25 so the pumpkins don't rot and the decorations aren't hanging around too long.

i love halloween so i start decorating on october 1st. don't carve your pumpkin until a day or two before halloween. a couple of tips for keeping your pumkin looking good:
apply a coat pf vaseline to all of the cut edges to keep the moisture in and if it starts to droop, soak it in a bucket of water for a while to pep it up.

If you want to set it out earlier than a couple of days ahead of time, then paint it...you can always carve it too right before Halloween.
Mine never got to the point of rotting, the squirrels always ate it first....never figured out how to keep the little buggers away....

At least wait until October. Don't carve until a day or so before.

A day or two before, no more or it rots and gets deformed.
