Okay dog owners/ those familiar with dogs, I got a question. I got this puppy back in February and is your normal dog. Sometimes she drinks her water too fast and ends up throwing it up in a wet belch. That's fine, she is just an impetuous puppy afterall.

What is weird though is for seemingly out of nowhere she'll start heaving like she has the hiccups. Instantly she switches into "vacuum cleaner mode" and stalks the floors with her face down licking the carpets making an underwater glub glub sound. She is apparently collecting and consuming dog hair. If she were to be outside, she would start eating the grass.

I know dogs like to eat grass to settle upset stomachs, but this doesn't seem to be the case. She doesn't barf after slurping around, she just lays down again. Even if I stop her and put her in her cage she seems fine, like the event is more mental than physiological.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like your dog has what is called the reverse sneeze syndrome. No big deal. The dog sounds like it's choking to death and can't get a breath right? Call your vet and try to imitate the sound just to be sure. When it happens you can try coaxing the dog out of it, or startling the dog out of it. My shih-tzu does it every time I get her in the tub. Like I said call the vet to be sure. But if that's what it is then there is nothing you can do about it and it's no big deal.

When I thought my pug puppy was doing the same thing, the vet said she was just sniffing really loudly. The hiccup noise isn't coming from the throat, but from the nose as she would pull in air and send out air in really quick bursts. When she found something she wanted to eat (usually bugs like grasshoppers), she would lick it up real quick and start the sniffing/hiccuping noises all over again. I don't think its a problem, but if you aren't sure yet visit the vet; they may be able to tell you more about it.

My dog did that all the time. As long as she's not throwing up excessively, she's fine. My dog always would hiccup after she rode in the car or after she drank a lot. She's 4 or 5 now and she sometimes still does that but not nearly as often.

This is completely normal. Puppies get hiccups all of the time. Even adult dogs will get hiccups. Mine does. It's not harmfull in any way. Your dog probably also licks fabric too. Like your shirt or pants, or maybe your couch cushions and sheets on your bed. Listen, humans get hiccups too. Do you run out to the doctor to get rid of them? Or do you try one of the old wives tales? Like swallowing a spoon full of dry sugar? Your dog just tries different ways to get rid of her hiccups, she's okay.

Errrrrmmmm...my dog gets the hiccups too but not quite like that! Ya heard of window lickers? I think you got the puppy version, lol! Seriously though, i have no idea! Check it out with the vets or just see if your pup outgrows it?

Good luck!

I don't think it's abnormal. My 8 month old pup gets the hiccups from time to time. He just eats or drinks too fast and swallows air.....

Have the dog checked for heartworms. The sounds are also symptoms as well. Dogs can get heartworms even if they are not outside animals.
