I have an automatic 2001 Focus SE with about 42000 miles on it and recently I'll be driving and the car will downshift for a second or two and then shift back into gear. The result is that the engine revs up, and I slow down a bit.

I noticed this a few months ago and took it into the dealer, but they said they couldn't find a problem. I had an oil and filter change done at the same time and the problem seemed to go away, but recently it started up again. I'm seeing it at least once a day now (two 10 mile drives).

Any ideas?

I think I've found that the problem is somehow tied to the electrical system as I can seem to get it to occur if I hold the window up bottom (which seems to cause a power drain).

Its a ford. Meaning its already a sorry car. Sorry to say. I wish American car manufactrers would do something to build cars that match or surpass the quality of Japenese cars. Just take care of it and make sure you have AAA to be there when it brakes down on you in the middle of a travel.

Automatic transmission operates off hydraulic pressure, it sounds as though you have got a small automatic transmission fluid leak, this will cause the vehicle to temporarily rev up as if its not in gear as the pressure comes back and the vehicles moving, it will operate the solenoid and the vehicle will regain gear, check for small fluid leaks, and check level of automatic transmission, if you top up the transmission oil, and it works fine then that's the problem

the reason the engine revs up as you are shifting is because the transmission is no longer putting any work on the engine. as soon as you engage the transmission back into drive, the engine begins to work again. that is why it slows a bit.
