I will be in night school on halloween, but this is the first year he will be going out in a costume. He will only be 17 months, but seeing as this is his first, and i want to be there, do you think it's worth it? My teacher says he's skipping out to take his girls out...i suppose i could arrange to get the notes from someone else. what would you do?

It depends :
A) is there a grade for class attendance/participation and if so how much of the course grade is it?
B) how many weeks is the night class or classes ? say it's a 12 week course and u only miss one night of 12 that isnt as bad as if it was a 5 week course
C) check out the local burbs - some do trick or treating on the weekend before (or just after depending on the date) halloween. that way you could do both though the trick-or-treating wouldnt be on halloween eve
D) make plans to have someone get you a copy of their notes if u dont make the class BUT wait until the day of to see what the weather is gonna be like? if it's going to be really really cra**y why drag your kid and yourself out ... won't be a positive memorable night if it's pouring rain and/or cold.
E) lot of drunks and bars where u will be on the night of the 31st? then opt for the class

i'd base my own decision on the above *if i had to*- my one and only kiddle will be 14.5 months for trick-or-treating ... took her last year to a few houses on sunday 2-4 pm when our burb had it. this year going to take her to a sat night (28th i think?) outing; then burb 2-4 sunday afternoon. not going to bother dealing with drunks on the road the night of the 31st.

I would skip school. Halloween is too much fun to miss and school will be there the next day. Your son is 17 months thats a great age to start trick or treating. Have fun and it must be ok if the teacher is skipping school too lol

That is a toughie! Both are very important! I might catch alot of crap for saying this but... I would take your son trick or treating....one night of class can be made up, his first Halloween can't be.
Another option would be to see if there is a beggars night in your area (where trick or treat is done the night b4) or if your local mall offers trick or treat at an earlier time.

If the teacher isn't going to be there, I guess it might not be so bad. What will you be missing, do you know?

I was originally going to say wait until next year. A 17 mos old won't last more than a couple of houses and may be overwhelmed or scared by the whole thing.

I can't say I never skip class, but is your son even old enough to understand Halloween? If he were in grade school, I would understand, but it might be a wasted effort on your part this year.
Why not just schedule him a play date with a friend instead?

Go to school so you get get a job and afford to be there when you child can remember. This year you are really doing it for yourself. Your child want understand trick-or-treating,and can't eat most of the candy anyway. Find a party at church or a community center that might be at a time you can enjoy dressing you child up and letting him be with other children,it might also be less frighten to him.

At 17 months, I don't think your presence is quite as significant. If your kid was 3 or 4, I might say skip class.
