I am on birth control and I smoke cigs, I know this increases the chance of blood clots already and its bad, so please hold the lectures. Anyway, I banged my leg the other day and developed a pretty nasty black and blue. Now my whole leg feels a little achy and weak like I exercised a ton and its strained. Is that a symptom of a blood clot??

a bruise like that is basically a blood clot, it is blood pooling under the skin and clotting. What you are asking about is DVT or deep vein thrombosis. For the most part DVT doesn't cause any sensation in the legs, they are too deep. But when those clots break loose, they go to the lungs, you become very tired and very short of breath. You know you are already at risk because you choose to smoke. If you experience any shortness of breath, or severe fatigue, you'd best get to and emergency center and get checked out.

The best way to determine wether or not you have a blood clot is to visit youe doctor. He or she will most likely do a sonogram on the area. If you have one they generally treat with a blood thiner by injection to the stomache once a day for a period of about one week.

You more than likely have a bruise or even a hematoma....which are basically superficial blood clots. This is probably not a clot in the vein (DVT)....because that doesn't happen from injury.

I would see the doc on that. Blood clots are pretty serious and many die from them if not found early and treated.
