That has been a sore subject for me for years. I was the hostess at a restaurant for several years and it was part of my job to ask patrons to fill out a comment card (which, by the way, I referred to as a "compliment card") and only the ones that were having a bad day and were not happy with the service would fill one out. Since that time, I make a point of filling out those comment cards, telling people how much I appreciate something, etc.
I travel a lot, so I see a lot of public rest rooms. I stopped in one convenience store and used the ladies room. I want to tell you it was the most pleasant of all public restrooms I had ever seen. There was a flowery fragrance inside, the room was absolutely spotless, there were 2 vases of eucalyptus branches on the wall on either side of the mirror and the mirror looked brand new. I told the cashier that it was the nicest restroom I had ever been in - and I had been in a whole bunch of them! She asked if I had a minute to fill out a comment card and I gave it the time it deserved, including my name and address.
A few weeks later, I received a letter from the store headquarters with a coupon for 25% off anything in store on a subsequent trip. The powers that be really do see those cards and really do appreciate them. Give credit where credit is due - always.

I do because I know what it's like to work in service. I have received many compliments and it feels great to be recognized for doing a good job. In return I try to do the same when I have great service elsewhere. So I know some people do... More people should cuz it's hard to find these days!

Yes, in fact recently after we were audited the state of Georgia sent us a bill for almost $1,000 in taxes!! After the shock wore off we contacted the local tax office and the lady that helped us was soooooo sweet and super professional. I made it a point to get her name and turn in a proper compliment. I mean for someone to make a really unpleasant experience pleasant takes style and megapersonality and she had it!

Both would be nice. The employee will appreciate the remarks and the manager will know they have a good employee.

If it's retail, yes, please tell the manager. They can get raises, bonuses, and promotions.
If it's restaurant service, please show your appreciation in a nice tip. It also won't hurt to let the managers know. In my experience as a server, I've had many people approach the manager to let them know what a fab job I did and recommended a raise. We don't get raises!
Servers hate the "verbal tips". You did a great job, honey, but it never reflects in the tip. Verbal tips don't pay the bills!

I sure do, when it is outstanding service. Doesn't matter what business or establishment. I make sure I thank them and make sure it's noted. Too bad I can't do it any more often than I do.
