Useful answer, Thanks, Redsoxer. I can't imagine why I might have thought this couldn't be done---apart from the fact that Messenger for Mac has no "Enter Chat" feature ...

I've never done the chat room on either Windows or Mac, but maybe this is what you're looking for?
In the menu bar "Conversation" to "New Conference"
Looks like this allows you to initiate a chat room.

How about the fact that your original question was a stupid question? You did not specify what you were talking about, in any manner shape or form. Macs can participate in all types of chat, however, since your such a smart ***, figure it out for yourself.
