First thing I woould look at is the flywheel on the car. If the teeth around the circumfirance are excessively worn you have an alignment problem. The starter gear is not meshing with the flywheel and needs to be adjusted using shims. If there are no signs of mis-alignment then next would be the starter itself. Over time the armature bearings inside the starter can wear causing slack, and a lot of noise, in the starter as it is rotating. There are not many other places a "grinding" noise can come from in the starter/flywheel.

could be one of four things

1. someone replaced the starter with a cheap aftermarket starter. to fix apply or remove shims some or all between starter and engine block. these shims take up the distance the bendix is applied to the flywheel ring gear. not enough shims the starter usually locks into the ring gear and hangs for a second causing grinding until the starter bendix retracts. too many shims won't let the bendix fully engage into ring gear allowing the gears to only use the edges to start your car, causing grinding as well. a good way to tell is grinding after the car starts not enough shims. grinding during the starting process too many shims.

2. bendix gear is worn badly, replace starter

3. ring gear is worn badly, replace flywheel

4. take your starter to a parts store and have it checked for dragging, when dragging occurs the bendix is applied to the flywheel slower than acceptable causing grinding until fully engaged. replace starter if necessary

hope this helps

It sounds like the starter gear is not meshing with the flywheel. You need to inspect both. When you take the dust cover off look for metal filing.

Sounds like the starter is falling off. If not you may need a flywheel.

some models have shims to line up the starter,if it has been replaced, they may have left out the shims. good luck
