You can contact the medical board and give the doctor's name. They shouls be able to tell you if there are any disciplinary actions pending or if he/she has been sued, etc... However, the tricky part is nurses and other medical personnel like the anesthisiologist, lab technicians, hospital pharmacist, etc... will have some control over your care and you can not go doing background checks on every employee of the hospital who could possible oversee you. How many suits the hospital has had should be a matter of public record. I wonder if you call their legal department if they are obligated to give you that info or if the Department of Health in your state knows. Not to worry you further, but in any case most complaints against hospitals never get to the courthouse , they are settled behind closed doors, insurance pay, etc.. So you may never know the whole truth, but it might be worth comparing your hospital stats with those of other hospitals in the area. If they look much better, either their hospital staff is more competent or they have a more competent Legal Department!!! Good luck with your surgery!

First, get a second opinion on the surgery you are facing. A different doc and a different hosptial. ALWAYS get a second opinion.
Next, contact the department of licensure for your state, if a doctor has complaints against him, that information is in the public domain and the dept of licensure for professional licensing can tell you if he does.
Contact also the better business bureau and the Joint Commision of Accreditation of Hospitals to see how your hospital did in it's last inspection. Good luck to you.

you realize the hospital does background checks on their own doctors, right?

and by the way, if i was a doctor, and you asked to see my credentials before i operated on you, i wouldnt be offended.
