The amount of strings.Four-string basses vs. five-string basses.
The fifth string on a bass is a B string, a fourth below the traditional low E string. While most bass players will find the standard four-string basses quite adequate, a few bass "pioneers" want the additional range that is available in a five-string. If you have huge hands (a five-string bass fretboard is, as you might expect, a lot wider than a four-string) and expect to be playing a lot of bass solos, a five-string just might be what you're looking for. Plus, a five-string gives bass players that extra "oomph" when competing with synth bass parts. 6-string basses slap an extra, high-C string on above the G, giving you up to either G-Sharp (A-Flat) on a 20-fret bass, or C on the 24-fretter

2 more strings
on a bass, the additional strings are lower than the normal 4, and tuned a perfect fourth lower.
so on a 4 string bass, your low string is an E. on a 5 string, the new string is under the E string, and tuned to A. on a 6 string, the new string is tuned to D.
I wouldnt recommend buying a 5 or 6 string if you are a beginner. Learn the basics of a 4 string first. Many bass players dont even bother with more strings - if you are good, you dont need them.

More strings means more options for notes. For a first bass, I would go 4 or maybe 5, but get used to less first, then work up to a bass with 5 or 6 strings if you want to.

5 is fine for most bass uses 4 for a beginner, you won't need 6, unless you get good enough to show off but many amazing bass players use 4 strings, one of my friends has a 7, completely useless like the 5 blade razor

The other two strings (B and E) give your bass a better extension. This means you can play a wider variety of notes.
I suggest you go for a 5 or 6 strings. if you play jazz, fusion, funky etc..
For rock n' roll 4 is way enough.
