I read a really good extract from a book or a short story today. I'd like to read the book but the title was not printed. Are there any web sites where I can find out by using an example of the extract?

It depends on how long your excerpt or extract is. If it is very short, you are probably going to be out of luck. If it is longer, there may be clues in it to help you research it on the internet on a search engine, like Yahoo.
A librarian may not be of much help to you, unless the excerpt is famous and/or it contains enough information to trace the source.

Search for some of the words on google. It's what I do when I know the lyrics but not the song. If it's a well-known book you might get lucky.

A strategy that usually works when I am looking for songs and only know a few lyrics:
Type part of it into google, use quotation marks (which indicate you are searching for that exact phrase rather than just a list of keywords) and see what comes up.

Can you put some of the extract on here, if its not too long.

Even names of characters may help.

A Google search would probably help, especially if you knew the author of the piece. Then you would Google something along the lines of "Author's name......first line of text".

First of all I think you mean excerpt, not extract.
Go to your nearest public library and ask the help desk.
