2 to 3 times a day is ideal. If you have any questions about the amounts, please refer to the feeding instructions on your bag of dog food.
Just make sure to keep your pup on a schedule, for both feeding and potty, so it will get used to the routine of "time to eat" and "time to poop". Both puppies and babies thrive on routine.
Good luck! Shih Tzu's are a great breed, and very friendly!

You should feed Max 3 times a day at his age. Get a good quality dry food that has a meat as the first ingredient. Be sure to take him out about 20 minutes after each meal. Take him out to pee every 30 minutes when he is loose in the house with you. Pull all food and water 2 hours before you go to bed for now so you can train him. At this age he should be sleeping in a crate as it's much easier to potty train them that way. Good luck. I have a Shih-Tzu. She is 8 lbs and her name is Tuffy. >^..^<

An 8 week old puppy should be fed 4 times per day, as they eat so little at each meal..and this makes potty training so much easier..
Feed him on a strict routine, as puppies adapt to routine very quickly, also an important aid in potty training.
Put his food down, and pick it up after he finishes, or about 5 minutes..take him for a walk until he poops and pees. Walking stimulates the bowels...
Repeat at noon, 4 and 8...(or whatever regular hours will fit your schedule) take for pee breaks any time he acts restless..
Praise him every time he pee/poops, but never scold for mistakes..Just as in toilet training a toddler..
At 12 weeks, reduce the quantity of one mid day feeding, until within the week it is deleted..But continue the mid day pee break..Pups can hold their pee for about 1 hour per month of age.
Keep water down at all times..
If you feed a premium food, his poop piles will be much smaller, and he will have optimum nutrition for a long, healthy life..
Feed dry food, in puppy sized kibble pieces..moisten it during teething, at about 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 months..then return to dry if he eats it well...If you feed canned, he will get quickly spoiled, and dry is much healthier for his dental health..

Go to a vet for advice for feeding your toy/small sized dog. If they do not get enough nutrition they can actually go into a type of coma (the puppy sleeps a lot and is difficult to waken). Little dogs require small portions of food throughout the day to maintain their nutritional needs..

3 times per day for any dog of any breed under 6 months of age. 2 times per day after 6 months for the rest of their life. This prevents many problems from cropping up later on.

Ok....if you have a new puppy, then I guess you also have a Veterinarian ???? Ask your Vet. He or she will give you the best advice possible. If, for some reason you don't have a vet, call ANY vet and ask them that question. They should be able to give you an answer.

3-4,start with soft food, after about 3 months old you can start mixing in dry food, eventually weening the dog off the soft food all together, saving you $$$.Feed it every 4-5 hours,a little at a time.

i would take his weight and then divide it by how many letters in his name then take the resulting number.. divide it by zero. add the resulting number with the average number of times he feels like he needs to eat.
