Sure. Scientology is based on the theory that there are these clumps to spirits called "Thetans" that live in your body and accumulate bad experiences that happen to you. After that, these thetans cause you problems in dealing with new experiences.

All in all, not that completely wacky, right?

When you start in Scientology, they don't tell you about the thetans, but they start off with the general principles, and try to get you to "clear" by "auditing" ... that is, reliving bad/shameful experiences over and over and over with a mentor until they've lost the power to influence you.

Again, not totally off the wall. Then they bring in the thetan thing, and show how it "works" by using a pizoelectric device called an "e-Meter" which just measures electrical resistance in the skin. But the needle moves up and down as your skin moisture changes minutely and such, and it looks impressive.

After many months or years of you telling them about everything bad you've ever done, they start revealing more and more... in classes. Expensive classes. That you can pay for, or recruit more people for. People, say friends or family, who resist it, are labelled "Potential Trouble Sources," or if strongly enough, "Suppressive People." If they don't believe in Scientology, they're bad for you.

But you have all these new friends. And have dedicated a lot of energy, money, and/or time to the church.

Eventually, you move up into the higher eschelons. Then, things get weird.

According to court documents, near the top level of Scientology, you're taken out to a remote location, and during periods of isolation and indoctrination, given "the truth."

Billions of years ago, a galactic overlord named Xenu needed to control overpopulation. So he gathered up all his enemies and froze them. Then they were packed into spaceships that look exactly like gold DC-8s. The frozen aliens were then put in volcanoes in Hawaii and other places on Earth, where they were hit with nuclear bombs. Then, the spaceships vacuumed up all the dead alien souls and took them to a movie theater, forcing them to watch violent and confusing movies until they forgot who they were. These souls wandered off, clumped together, and landed in people. And these are thetans.

Now, imagine I gave you THAT sentence first. It sounds like bad science fiction. The guy who "discovered it" was... a pulp science fiction writer. Knowing that, you'd never have gotten down this far. Why do you think Scientology hides this part of their religion until you've committed your life to it and withdrawn from friends and family who aren't a part of the organization? And that they tell people that knowing this stuff too soon would literally drive them insane?

If you're interested, there's a lot of information out there on how they use all those bad things you told them about yourself while you were getting "clear" if and when you decide to try to leave the church.

And how they deal with critics.

It's a dangerous cult that whittles away on its members' wallets and mental health. They have some blather about a religion, but it's just for show; inside, there are brainwashing techniques that start with the first courses, which involve forms of hypnotism, such as the courses that involve hour-long staring contests, screaming at ashtrays, repeatedly standing and sitting, and other lunacy. The cult's courses start to get expensive pretty quickly. Scientology specifically preys on up-and-coming actors and entertainers. If they make it big, they're already in Scientology's pocket; also, they can claim their success was all due to Scientology.

As someone explained it to me, it's a re-working of Freud with new terms that basically mean the same things and a lot of people hear have said them.

Freud talked about Id, Ego, SuperEgo and Libdio

Well, Hubbard simply gave those things new names and then the Scientiologists came out with devices you have to buy to measure these things.

It's a little like The Force in Star Wars.

Little things inside of you that can be mesured by this device.

You are expected to "buy" into things, literally.

First is the Book, Dianetics, which has like 500 milllion copies RESOLD by Scientologists. You eventually turn yours in for recycling.

Then there's the meter, which is something like a galvonic skin reponse meter or lie detector, that measures electrical energy caused by sweat and sodium.

Then there's the housing. They have their own apartments and you go into these to become closer to those who know so you can become one.

In the US it is, legally, a religion. The US TAX courts recognized it and the IRS exempts them. So Scientology (a Religion formed in 1951) is legally a tax exempt reigious orgniazation.

Scientology is essentially a for profit religion that preys on the weak mind of those who are in search of self understanding. It is based wholly on the ideals of a science fiction writer and purports that we are filled with the souls of dead aliens who were murdered on earth millions of years ago. The religion uses fake analyzers and other tools to fleece financial support from its follower promising them deeper levels of enlightenment as they give more money. It is absolutely a crock and it's followers are extremely brainwashed and its leaders corrupt crooks who extort and blackmail those who attempt to discredit it.

First and foremost, for them to even talk to you, you will have to somehow show that you have enought money or credit to be worthy to them.

It is a study of the self. You are taught that you will come to understand exactly who you are as you travel through the different levels of self examination, counseling, and of course payment for each level attained.

You will learn that you are number one and all else on earth is secondary and can be listed in terms of priority. Self is always number one. God is number 10 on the list of 10 priorities.

Once you have spend enough time and money to reach the final level, you will have learned (been enlightened) that you are God. That your truth is the only truth for you.

Actually scientology is for dummies with money, for a fool and his money will be soon parted.

L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer that people started taking way too seriously. He created a big money making phoney religion that caught on with fringe wackos and hollyweird famous folk.

Top secret Scientology teachings include the tale of Lord Xenu, alien ruler, who collected thousands upon thousands of aliens from overpopulated planets, flew those aliens in DC-8 airliners to Earth and dropped them into volcanoes where they burned to death. Their "thetan" spirits latched onto human hosts and are still with us today, according to Scientology. To rid ourselves of "thetans", we have to go through "auditing" with an "e-meter" and pay lots and lots and lots of money to take courses on Scientology.

Scientology is undeniably a cult.

Every cult can be defined as a group having all of the following five characteristics:

1. It uses psychological coercion to recruit, indoctrinate and retain its members
2. It forms an elitist totalitarian society.
3. Its founder leader is self-appointed, dogmatic, messianic, not accountable and has charisma.
4. It believes 'the end justifies the means' in order to solicit funds & recruit people.
5. Its wealth does not benefit its members or society.

Are Cults Harmful?

To remain within the strict mental and social confines of a cult for even a short time can have the following disastrous effects:

Loss of choice and free will. Diminished intellectual ability, vocabulary and sense of humor. Reduced use of irony, abstractions and metaphors. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships. Poor judgment. Physical deterioration. Malnutrition. Hallucinations, panic, dissociation, guilt, identity diffusion and paranoia. Neurotic, psychotic or suicidal tendencies.
