The x5 had a great run over the years, and continues as a great SAV. Many mfg's have caught up to and surpassed the x5 as it aged though. The all new 2007 x5 will incorporate all of bmw's new technological advances, and will be a great truck. I haven't driven them yet, but from everything i hear, it will be much better than any land rover, mercedes or lexus. I can't wait.

Pointless waste of metal. Want speed, get a sports car, what sounds and looks better a BMW or a Masarati which will be similarly priced. If you do want it for off-road then get a Land Rover Defender, costs a lot less and will go anywhere, well pretty much. Or even better get a Bowler Wildcat. I drove one once and it was brilliant. 0-60 in 4.8 seconds OFF-ROAD and although it isn't exactly comfortable you wouldn't care once you drove it. Oh and they never drove it into a deformable concrete block because it would probably go through it. A 35 mile an hour crash will scratch the paint, but they are so sturdy that the body won't know anything about it.

It's nothing more than an SUV-ized 5-series station wagon, but it's been selling well and keeping BMW profitable. In the 4.6is form it's supposed to drive really well, if you like driving tall and heavy 4x4 station wagons.

I saw one of the pre-production 2007 X5's on the road the other day in western NC, and was impressed with the improved looks. Not sure if it finally gets it's own platform or continues to share it with the 5-series, though. See link below:

I really can't see the point. Its a very fast car, but if its speed you are looking for then why not go for an M5 which is not only quicker but a couple of grand cheaper!! or even an Audi S4! If you want to go off road, just buy a Land Rover/Range Rover or Jeep. There are too many better alternatives for the price to warrant owning an X5.

as a 4x4 its very bad. best is range rover but if too pricey go for the cheaper x3, same size just cheaper. if you're after a 4x4 maybe an audi s4 would do.

I actually quit like the car, but yes there are others out there that are better, for one reason or another.
