As much as quinine is said to be the best drug for malaria, its reserved for complicated malaria which involves anaemia, convulsions, jaundice etc. However the firstline treatment of malaria if you catch it is coartem( artemethre/lumefantrin-combination)
For prophylaxis, use doxycycline, larium or mefloquin
Hope this helps

Quinine is still the best PREVENTATIVE medicine. One never builds up a tolerance for the drug, so it remains effective for as long as you use it.

Quinine is also easily obtainable, since even a well stocked liquor store should carry quinint water. Easy to take, since you can use the quinine water as a mixer with lots of alcoholic beverages, or, added to soft drinks, such as lemonade, or juices.

Once you catch malaria, I don't know what works best to treat it.

I take Larium once a week 3 weeks prior to travel plus while out there & 3 weeks after I come home,if you see your own GP he will put you on the appropiate course of treatment some people, are allergic to certain drugs so, it is better to be safe rather than sorry.
