.you know i have 11 birds and 6 are parakeets..now ,i know alot about birds but this time i'm truly baffled. the parakeets are in a big cockatiel cage and have been for YEARS,the past week or so,,one particular parakeet keeps getting out. some way some how. i've searched the cage up and down..i've looked at all the bars ,,they're in great shape..there's no hole or anything ,,,how does he get out? the space between the bars are the regular size for parakeet or cockatiel...can't get their head through them....so tell me..how do you think this bird is getting out?? they've never done this for years until recently!!!! birds do not have the ability to flatten their bodies like rodents and sqeeze through huh??

Everyone is right...they have learned how to open the cage!
The best story I ever heard about this was a Cockatoo who had figured out how to open his cage door. He'd done it so many times His Human Companions kept it locked with a keyed padlock. Eventually, he figured out how to stretch his leg out through the cage bars to get the key off the nail on the wall. He got the key, opened the lock on the cage latch, opened the door, got out, shut the door and relocked the padlock.
The finale?
He dropped the key into the locked cage, climbed on top of the cage and waited. When his people came home, he began laughing hysterically.
They found out why he was laughing when they discovered that they had to dismantle the cage in order to retrieve the key.
These little guys are smart!

I was watching a bird show where a guy had a crow in a cage and he would put his wallet in a safe right in front of the crows cage. The Crow would wait for him to leave the room and he would open his cage and turn the dial on the safe and get the wallet out take the money back to his cage and shut the door on the cage. He had it on film.
So birds are very smart.

Little escape artist!!!!
I have kept many different types of birds for many, many years. From blue and gold macaws, cockatoos, greys...to budgies. At one time or another throughout the years I had an escape artist, and like you they sometimes baffled me. More often than not it has something to do with either the door(s) or where the food cups are (if outside access cups). Might even be where the bottom tray slides out for cleaning.
Keep watching closely and hopefully you'll catch him in the act...for his own safty.
Good luck!!!

Does the door move up and down on the wires like a guillotine? I bet it does. He has figured out how to lift the door and slip out. I'ts really not hard for them to learn and having done it once, they'll keep at it whenever they want.
You'll need to lock the door. The easiest thing is to buy a clip like you'd find on the end of a dog leash. Use that to hold the door down.
Viola! Control is back again.

Here's a suggestion. If u have access 2 a camcorder place it where it can see the birdcage and leave it on record.Come back later and if the bird is out u should be able 2 tell how it got out.The camera doesn't lie.B sure u zoom in on the birdcage while recording.Let me kno if this works.

I had two peach-faced lovebirds that kept getting out. I watched one time and one of them figured out how to mess with the latch, open the door for the other bird, and off they'd go. He always came back, but the others didn't!!! Secure the latch better.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. What it ended up bieing was thet my parakeet has learned to go to the door, grab it at the bottom in his beak, throw it up, and dart at least partially out, then he would wiggle out and off he would go. We ended up having to twist tie the doors on his cage closed. He had the type of cage were the doors slid up. I hope this helps.

Charis is right, he learned how to slide up the door where you out in the water and seed with his beak. Try tying the doors with a breadtie and see if that helps.
