You shouldn't expect any gift from anybody.
But in the boyfriend department. He should get you a little something.
Maybe he's strapped for money . If he is totally broke and cares for you.
He would at least explain why he hasn't recognized your Birthday. Heck even a homemade card or an Email would at least be cute.
If he does nothing with no explaination it only shows that he doesn't really care to much unless his religion doesn't celebrate birthdays .
e.g. Jehovah Witness. Do not celebrate birthdays.
...If none of the above and all you get is "Oh yeah Happy Birthday"
Time to change Boyfriends.!!! Quick!!!

Of course you should get a gift for your birthday. It may not mean he's a loser that for you to decide, but it means he's inconsiderate. Afterall you are in a relationship with him and I don't care how many times the excuse is made that guys forget things - your birthday should be one he remembers or you should consider if he is really into you.

No, not loser. It means he's an idiot. No offense... but even if you're just friends you should always buy a gift. It's the right thing to do when you're in any kind of relationship with someone- friendly or romantic.
If he doesn't buy you a gift... it's not the end of the world... but it's kindof upsetting. You'll be disappointed, I promise, even if you don't think you will be. It would be the right thing for him to do.

The way I see it is this. A gift does not have to be of a certain value. It could cost nothing to make but mean the world to you. If he gets you nothing at all, whether or not he is broke, means that he doesnt care much for you. Like I said, he could glue a bunch of macaroni shells together that says I Love You for your birthday or something like that. If he gets you nothing at all then you werent worth the effort it takes to buy (or make) a gift.

It depends. I didn't get my wife anything for her birthday the year before we got married, but I bought a house that month and a diamond ring four months before (yes, engagement ring if you're that slow) so really, I had no money in the bank. (Nada, zilch, zero, I ate on the kindness of family.) Things cleared up by the next year though and I haven't missed one since.

He should at least make you a card or something... I mean, an extravagant gift might not be necessary. If he is sweet to you on your b-day & takes you out to dinner or even cooks for you, that should be enough. (remember, it's the thought that counts) but if on your b-day he goes shopping for himself or something, that's when you should get pissed cause he didn't get you an actual present.
