What is the lifespan of jute products, especially used in building and construction? I am doing some research on jute that was used instead of wood for inserting or anchoring metal into concrete. This was practiced in the early to mid 1900's.

Jute is almost indestructible by "Time".

It is grown in water and as such is nearly impervious to damage by moisture, although it can mold.
I don't intend to insinuate that it is not destructible. It is highly resistant to the elements.

Jute was used for many years as a backing for carpet, two backings. The primary back, into which the spun fibers were stitched. The secondary backing was applied after the primary backing, with the fibers, by a coating of latex adhesive. This gave stability to the finished carpet and locked the fibers as an integral part of the carpet.

The price of Jute has risen over the years and synthetic backings are used at the present time and have been for several years. This synthetic backing was developed after a world wide shortage of jute occurred. Part of that shortage occurred with the "defoliation" in Vietnam. Some came about with crop destruction in Pakistan. Cuba produced quantities of Jute and with embargoes against them, that supply was diminished or dried up.

Jute was also widely used as underlayment padding for carpet. Synthetics have virtually replaced that.
(If you care to know the first underlayment material, email me. Interesting story.

Today, China is a large producer of Jute, if not the largest.

China now produces a beautiful array of rugs made entirely of jute. They resist wear nicely.

As you must know, jute is no longer used in concrete.

Hope this adds a little to your research.
