I have the oxford dictionary of English surnames and there are some extremely close variations, including Boggis, Bogges, Bogas and all seem to have the root mean from the 'bog' which is an adjective used to mean bold, proud or saucy. One of the earliest example was William Bogges 1327 so the name is connected to Middle English also included was the definition bogeys: inclined to bluster or brag, puffed up, bold.
