I work for H&R Block, have similar experience, and currently make between $9 and $13 per hour, depending on the work I'm doing at the time.

H&R Block has a great pay structure, and in most place you'd start out at more than you're making now. Check to see if there's a Basic Tax Class in your area, since you have to have that to work for Block. I'm a New Hire Coordinator, so if you're interested, let me know and I'll hook you up with someone in your area.

Unless you're living in some small, backwater town with virtually no other employment opportunities, you should be paid more. Heck, even Home Depot out here in the Chicago area starts people around $10/hour!

That said, out here in the Chicago 'burbs, you would probably start out around $10-$15/hour, depending on your skill level and years of experience. As far as the poster making $60,000/year with no degree, I would say that he/she is extremely fortunate, because no accountant in this area with only a couple of years experience and no CPA would make that kind of money. Realistically, you should be making probably around $30,000-$35,000/year if you're good at what you do.

Check out the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics. They list all sorts of jobs and fields and what the outlook is for those fields and the rates of pay that people tend to receive.

I have two years experience at a CPA firm, no CPA license, and am halfway through grad school. I'll earn between 60-65k this year if you want to use that as a barometer.
